An individual earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was publicly declared, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of the US operation.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the period preceding Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a initial bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that users assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

But these probabilities had climbed to over 10% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the early hours of Saturday, pointing to a sharp shift in market sentiment just before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a bet based on non-public details," stated an industry expert.

Several of other platform users also made significant sums from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule introduced on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the past few years, with participants able to wager on everything from elections to politics.

Prediction markets were examined under the previous administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting arena.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
