Conservative responses to the limited release of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive redactions portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Administration Defends Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the censorship process.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and image appear in some of the documents, the extensive redactions raise serious concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans immediately demanded greater openness.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a future legislature may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Release
But, some rightwing commentators and former President allies swung firmly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are entirely censored, and many of the men shown in photographs have their faces obscured.
Yet a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the offensive.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats falsely accused President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Response
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these documents for months only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued
However, overall comment on the right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to pass a bill mandating the files' publication.
The commentator, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were provided physical folders of materials that contained no new data.
