Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying these treatments need to be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
