The buzz about The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team is likely crafting a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—traits that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve with a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, players can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
