The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent prize-giving event nears, you'll find a clamor for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and delight the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
