Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
